Therapeutic interventions at the Manav Rehabilitation Centre are broadly divided into two groups Occupational Therapeutic Activities & Group Therapies
Occupational Therapeutic Activities
Occupational Therapeutic Activities are those that address the "functional" aspects of rehabilitation. Some individuals may not have family members to look after them for the length of their lifetimes and therefore the need to eventually function independently on a day to day basis is primary. Theseinclude:
Daily Living Skills This daily session ensures the acquisition of basic skills required for adequate functioning and endeavours to facilitate independence on a day to day basis. The fundamental objective of this intervention is to re-instil and in some cases, instil the ability to live with relative independence
Kitchen Skills These sessions cultivate independence and enhance function-ability. Through these sessions, an individual learns one kitchen skill a time and acquire skills such as chopping, frying, boiling, and time management, thus facilitating functional independence
Group Therapies
Group Therapies are those that engage the individual on a deeper level by attempting to facilitate a deeper self awareness, understanding and insight of her/his emotions, mental status, behaviour, and life path. Theseinclude:
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) Facilitated by Animal Angels Foundation, AAT involves a human and an animal therapist as a part of the process. A relationship is encouraged between the therapy animal and the individual. This forms very strong bonds and makes them comfortable expressing themselves without any fear of judgement or consequence. The benefit is distinctly clear especially in individuals who are not highly functional and have difficulty articulating their feelings and thoughts. This in turn induces cognitive development and ultimately, recovery
Music Therapy Music is accepted as a universal means to express one's emotions and is useful in building a rapport between people, communication and interaction. Music therapy at the centre help individuals connect with their feelings, express their thoughts, re-connect with their past and overcome isolation
Art Based Therapy (ABT) ABTemploys art expression as a way to understand the inner worlds of people with Mental Illness. This therapy integrates psychotherapeutic techniques with the creative process to improve Mental Health and well-being. Art finds expression in different forms like dance, drama, music, drawing, painting, sculpting, etc. ABT employs all these art forms in a therapeutic manner. When partaking in ABT, an individual is not 'learning' the art form, but using it as a medium of expression. This non judgemental and non threatening medium of therapy encourages self-expression, self-discovery, and emotional growth, opening up the pathways for healing. The main goals of the sessions are attention, concentration, alertness, creativity, hand motor coordination, impulse control, creating boundaries and self awareness and are designed for individuals and groups on a weekly basis by a certified Arts Based Therapist
Yoga Yoga at the Manav Rehabilitation Centre is facilitated by experienced Yoga instructors. This form of therapy modulates the stress response systems by directly affecting the perceived stress and anxiety. Yoga also helps individuals with reduced cognitive abilities to increase their capacity for attention and sustained awareness of their own body and their environment. Other benefits include improvement in blood circulation, oxygenation of brain cells, hand motor coordination, and flexibility
Bowen Therapy Bowen Therapy is facilitated by a trained & certified therapists and has been used as a therapeutic intervention at the centre since 2007. The Bowen technique involves using muscle and connective tissue mass with a series of precise, gentle, painless pressure moves. The moves are applied over clothing to improve energy flow and realignment of connective tissues mass in the body and aid in self healing
Drama Sessions Drama Sessions use theatre techniques to facilitate personal growth and promote Mental Health. It facilitates and allows for the surfacing of emotions using the body and the mind, channelizing energy creatively without inhibition. Through these sessions, individuals are able to bring to the surface obstacles faced in their personal lives and gain insight into their own difficulties
Dance Movement Therapy Dance Movement Therapy provides a platform for individuals to be themselves without any constraints or restrictions on their movements. Dance synchronizes the movement between mind and body, increasing motor coordination. Other benefits are the opportunity to establish increasing levels of comfort within oneself while boosting creativity, innovation, and self-love. The concepts of space, effective and appropriate communication are taught to promote social interaction, build confidence and ready an individual to live a more holistic life
