Built on core values of Dignity, Inclusion & Equality, MANAV Foundation was registered as a public charitable trust in 2004 with the objective of achieving inclusion of the Mentally Ill within society
The trustees of MANAV Foundation, one of whom is a caregiver of a family member living with Mental Illness, observed that whilst the world has increasingly responded to the growing threat to the human body, little had been done in India, to address the illiteracy around Mental Illness and Mental Health
To address the challenges faced by people living with Mental Illness MANAV Foundation began the Manav Rehabilitation Centre, in Mumbai in February 2005 as part of the “Manav Mental Health Project”
The centre provides rehabilitation services to adults recovering from Mental Illnesses such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and other illnesses of a mental nature
Over time our services have expanded and achieved many breakthroughs in the area of rehabilitation
Today, we also provide Care and Support to Caregivers, Counselling, After Care and Vocational Support to ensure complete integration within society
We are dedicated to increasing community involvement by creating awareness & sensitization towards Mental Health
By doing so, we generate and facilitate the use of local facilities & resources for Reintegration and Inclusion into Society
Meena's Story
Meena Mutha’s role as a founding trustee of the MANAV Foundation, started as the caregiver of a daughter with a learning disability who in her teens went on to develop a severe Mental Illness
Although affluent and well placed, the struggle of caring for an individual with vivid hallucinations, debilitating delusions, disordered thinking, confusion, mood disturbances, all left the family distressed, confused, and very frustrated
The long waits and visits to the psychiatrist, the agonizing process of administering medication, repeated hospitalizations, spiraling treatment costs, and the constant pressure of dealing with curious enquiries from relatives, neighbors and friends made Meena increasingly sensitive to the agony that other families with fewer resources at their disposal would be burdened with
After her daughter passed through the acute stage and stabilized, Meena realized the need for her daughter’s psychosocial rehabilitation. The illness had caused a process of unlearning basic personal, emotional, and social skills. Complete recovery was a long way off and the patient needed a multifaceted rehabilitation programme before she could be reintegrated with a constructive and engaging routine
The severe dearth of rehabilitation services left Meena shocked and helpless. Accepting the suggestion of the psychiatrist, she chose at this turning point, to use her past experience as a social worker to make available to the city of Mumbai, a quality rehabilitation service to help people with mental/emotional disturbances
All through her struggle of discovering her daughter’s Mental Illness, its treatment, and lack of rehabilitation services, a close family friend Mr. Suresh Gandhi stood by her, helping her to cope in every way possible. Meena suggested to him the idea of a rehabilitation centre and they went on to join forces with other like minded individuals to register the MANAV Foundation as a charitable trust with the Charity Commission in May 2004
And thus was born MANAV Foundation
Since then Meena has been on the forefront of the crusade against Mental Illness and has been recognized in multiple conferences and forums. Meena is a recipient of the Zee Astitva Award for her contributions in the field of Mental Health
